History
Several ancient cultures were known to use licorice for its therapeutic qualities, the ancient Greeks were the first to document it's use. Here are some of the problems licorice was traditionally used to help with, coughs, asthma, lung disease, artery disease, bladder & kidney pain. Licorice is 50 times sweeter than sugar and is also know as "sweet root", commonly used in tea's as a sweetener.

Research supporting therapeutic properties
Studies and clinical trials have been undertaken to validate the therapeutic properties of Licorice and its constituents for its antioxidant, antidepressant and anti-inflammatory qualities. Here is a small selection of many trials, on the following groups.

A study was done to identify the neuroprotective mechanism of antidepressant affects on the flavonoid glycoside compound Isoliquiritin from licorice. The findings suggest isoliquiritin provides a protective action against corticosterone induced cell damage by reducing oxidative stress.
